Lani’s secret obsession with Reality could get her banished, if her careless curiosity doesn’t get her killed first.
As an apprentice Source Mage, Lani is learning to create and control the portals that connect her hidden village of Veil to the outside world of Reality. Magi are forbidden to leave the safety of Veil – so of course, that’s all she can think of. When one of her portal manipulation exercises goes wrong, Lani inadvertently causes a near-fatal accident in Reality that puts her on death’s doorstep and could jeopardize the safety of Veil.
Rand considers himself unremarkable in every way. That is, until he recovers from a freak accident to find himself gifted with heightened cognitive and sensory abilities that are quickly driving him insane. When a stranger appears at his school masquerading as his father and offers him an escape from his agony, Rand goes against his better judgment and accepts. The next thing he knows, they are in a deserted underground parking garage, and the car they were in gets blown up.
Lead Rider Aarol wants nothing more than to protect Veil and its inhabitants at all costs, but that becomes increasingly difficult when Lani is involved. His strict moral code is put to the test when he is asked to keep Lani’s negligent actions a secret. Now she will die unless he breaks even more rules by contacting Rand in Reality and bringing him to Veil.
All hopes of a quick and quiet mission are lost when they are ambushed by a mysterious attacker who wields Energy like a Veiler. Someone in Reality is tracking them – someone who knows the one weakness of every Veiler and isn’t afraid to use it.
